Day 02: Kathmandu world heritage sites tour – 1st day, B, Hotel.

After a delightful breakfast in early morning, we leave to explore the UNESCO enlisted world heritage sites inside Kathmandu valley. At the first part of our trip, you will visit Kathmandu Durbar Square {Royal Palace Squares}, the site full of complex palaces, courtyards and temples. It was built between 12th and 18th centuries, ruled by ancient Malla Kings of Kathmandu. A piece of stone inscription of 17th century is set into the wall of the palace written in 15 languages. Durbar Square is surrounded with spectacular ancient architecture, arts and vividly showcases of the skills of the Newar artists and craftsmen over several centuries.

The next place we visit will be Pashupatinath Temple located at the bank of Holy Bagmati river which is highly famous among Hindus. The temple was erected by Lichchavi King Prachanda Dev during 5th century. During the festival of Maha Shivaratri {festival dedicated to Lord Shiva}, over one million devotees visit here. The area of Pashupatinath is extended to 0.64 hectares of land including 518 temples and monuments inside it.

The next site which we visit is Boudhanath Stupa which is one of the largest unique stupas in the world. It was built by King Manadeva during 13th century and renovated later and has become one of the most important center of Tibetan Buddhism. It is said that the Tibetan merchants have rested and offered prayers here for many centuries.

The last site we visit will be Swoyambhunath Stupa also known by the name Monkey Temple. The temple was founded by the great-grandfather of King Manadeva (464-505 CE), King Vṛsadeva, in about the beginning of the 5th century CE. The stupa is the oldest of its kind in Nepal and has numerous shrines and monasteries within the Monkey Temple area. Swoyambhu literally means "self-existent one", believed to date back to 460 A.D. and built by King Manadeva. The complex consists of a stupa, variety of shrines and temples and some dating back to the Lichchavi period. The reason we visit Swoyambunath at the end is that we can have the fabulous view of the sunset over Kathmandu valley. Then we return back to Hotel for the overnight rest.

A stone slab was discovered in the vicinity of the temple that dates to the 5th century. It is the oldest of such stone inscriptions discovered inside Nepal.

At the end, we drive towards Patan Durbar square located at south center of Kathmandu valley. Patan Durbar square is best known for its rich cultural heritage and its tradition of arts and crafts. It has one of the finest ancient arts and architectures and some of the best metallic and stone carving statues. The Malla Kings made important changes to area within the square.
