Langtang Tilman Pass is located at the upper region of Langtang National Park close to the border of Nepal and Tibet at an elevation of 5,320 m. It was discovered by British adventurer and explorer H. W. Tilman (1898-1977) AD and named this place after him. Tilman Pass is recognized as one of the toughest mountain passes of Nepal. The pass connects the Tamang valley of Langtang region with the sacred lakes of Panch Pokhari (meaning 5 lakes in Nepali language) while featuring continuous views of the Himalayas including the Langtang Himal range and Jugal Himal range. Trekking through this region gives you some of the best views of mountains like Langtang Lirung, Langtang Himal, Naya Kanga, Yala peak, Ganesh Himal, Langshisa, Gaurishankar and Dorje Lakpa along with the Himalayan pine forests. Tilman pass trekking trail is rich in diverse vegetation, animals, floras and faunas as the trekking trail is located in the region of Langtang National Park.

Rhododendron flowers, Tahr, Bears, Leopard, Jackal, Monkeys, wild boars, pheasants, peacock, etc. can be seen in this region during our trek. This area is also famous for Red Pandas and the blue Sheep. Langtang Tilman pass trek is famous by the name of Jugal Himal Trek and Panch Pokhari Trek as well, which contains a set of five small lakes. It is one of most famous holy lake for Hindus which is also recognized as ninth highest altitude wetland in the world. The lake is mostly crowed during the month of August during Nepalese festival Janai Purnima. The reason most of the people would love to choose this region for trekking is that you get to see beautiful scenery of Langtang Himalayan landscapes experiencing through different mixed cultural heritages.

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1460 m), BLD, Teahouse

After a delightful breakfast in the early morning, we drive towards the north-western hill of Kathmandu valley. We drive through mighty Trishuli River along with scenic view of Trishuli Bazaar. You will have your lunch at Trishuli bazaar. Driving through many hillside settlements, dense forests, rivers and waterfalls we reach to Dhunche and passing Dhunche we arrive at Syabrubensi where we stay our first night.

Day 2: Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2430 m), BLD, Teahouse

Our trekking starts from here. After a breakfast in the early morning we head towards our destination Lama Hotel. The initial segment of our trail crosses through mighty Bhote Koshi and then to Langtang Khola. Following the trial, we cross through the beautiful forests of bamboo and Rhododendron. Passing through the jungle, you might get to see different animals like wild Boars, Langur monkeys, Red pandas and many more. In next section of the trek, we reach Rimche passing which we reach Lama Hotel.

Day 3: Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang village (3430 m), BLD, Teahouse

After a breakfast in Lama Hotel, we start the hike again. Walking the path ahead, glimpse of snow-capped mountains can be seen. The path goes through the forest of Hemlocks, Oaks, Maples and Rhododendron observing glimpses of Langtang Lirung and then we climb to Ghoda Tabela. On the way, we reach the permits check point where we see the Military collecting ticket crossing which we reach beautiful Langtang Village.

Day 4: Trek from Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa (3870 m), BLD, Teahouse

We start the trek again after early morning breakfast. The trial ascends gradually through small villages and Yak pastures as passing through them, the view of valley becomes wider and clearer. Following the path and crossing streams and a moraine, we finally arrive at Kyanjin Gompa. Overnight at Kyanjin Gompa.

Day 5: Rest at Kyanjin Gompa for acclimatization, BLD, Teahouse

This day, we stay and explore Kyanjin Gompa as well as acclimatize ourselves, since crossing the height of 4000m abruptly may be dangerous in some cases due to chance of having altitude sickness. In the early morning after breakfast, we explore the oldest ancient monastery of this region Kyanjin Gompa following which the stunning views of mountain like Langtang Lirung, Ganjala, Yala peak, Dorje Lakpa and many more peaks can be seen. After exploring the whole place, we prepare for the next day trek to Langsisha Kharka.

Day 6: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Langsisha Kharka (4160 m), BLD, Tented camping

We leave in the early morning for Langsisha Kharka after early breakfast. The traces are snowy and icy which makes the trek difficult. Throughout the trek, we can witness the stunning view of Mt. Langshisa Ri (7427 m) and Dorje Lakpa (6966 m). After successfully crossing the icy and snowy paths, we finally reach the site of Langsisha Kharka, marked with colorful prayer flags and stone structures which looks really beautiful. We stay the night here in a tented camp.

Day 7: Trek from Langsisha Kharka to Moraine Camp (4600 m), BLD, Tented camping

After breakfast, we ascend our steps forward to Moraine camp situated at the height of 4600m. The fantastic day of our trek goes through the alpine vegetation. We stay a night in the Moraine camp.

Day 8: Trek from Moraine Camp to Tilman Base Camp via Tilman Pass (5320 m), BLD, Tented camping

After a night at Moraine camp, we start the walk towards Tilman base camp. The trek is exciting and enjoyable but quite tough too. The trek goes through rocky marine which makes it exciting. After reaching the base, we head towards Tilman Pass at dramatic height of 5320m and highest point of entire trek. You might feel difficulty while trekking through Tilman pass as it is at a very high altitude. The pass is beautiful as well as dangerous too. You will be totally surrounded by snow peaks from every side, east to west.  Looking ahead, we see terrain sloping steeply down to the valleys and the peaks feeding into the river which runs east to west at the foot of Langtang. After following the path for a quite descend, you will reach Tilman Base Camp. We spend the overnight at base camp.

Day 9: Trek from Tilman base camp to Tin Pokhari (3840 m), BLD, Tented camping

After early morning breakfast, we head towards our today’s destination Tin Pokhari (Three Lakes) which is also one of major attractions of Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking. We walk through the sandy areas and snowy slopes towards downhill. Tin Pokhari is a wonderful place with the magnificent beauty of the lakes along with the views of the Himalayan chains. Such a breath-taking view dominates the whole surrounding of Tin Pokhari with its beauty.

Day 10: Trek from Tin Pokhari to Panch Pokhari (4123 m), BLD, Tented camping

We start the trek in the early morning towards Panch Pokhari situated at the elevation of 4123m. The path takes us through alpine vegetation, Rocky Mountains and wild lives. Panch Pokhari never fails to offer you the excellent view of Jugal Himal Range, Rolwaling range, Gosaikunda, etc. Apart from being just a lake, this place is also famous for two pilgrim houses and a temple of Lord Shiva. Overnight at Panch Pokhari.

Day 11: Panch Pokhari excursion day, BLD, Tented camping

After late waking up and hot breakfast in the morning, we wander all around Panch Pokhari and explore the whole place enjoying its stunning natural beauty. If you want to see the beautiful sunrise over Panch Pokhari, you can wake up in the early morning. The two pilgrim houses and temple of Lord Shiva are mostly crowed during the festival of Janai Purnama. This place is mostly visited by Buddhist and Hindus every year.

Day 12: Trek from Panch Pokhari to Nasem Pati (3810 m), BLD, Tented camping

We leave Panch Pokhari in the early morning and descend our steps to the Nasem Pati with moderate walk and gradual path through the rocky hills. Passing through the alpine vegetation, Rocky Mountains and wild lives, we finally reach Nasem Pati. Overnight in Nasem Pati.

Day 13: Trek from Nasem Pati to Bhanjyang (3414 m), BLD, Tented camping

We gradually descend downward through rocky hills and Rhododendron forests to continue our walk in the early morning. The walk from this place is quite easy comparing to others. At the end of the walk, we reach in a small village called Bhanjyang. We explore the cultures and daily lifestyles of the local people.

Day 14: Trek from Bhanjyang to Pauwabas (3030 m), BLD, Tented camping

We leave Bhanjyang in the early morning and head towards Pauwabas. We can have some great mountain views on our way down into our camp. Then we start to ascend through the Rhododendron forests where we can witness wild lives like mountain Deer and Danfe (National Bird of Nepal). The trail then leads steeply down to reach Pauwabas. Overnight at Pauwabas.

Day 15: Trek from Pauwabas to Kharka (2855 m), BLD, Tented camping

On the following day, we will have our delightful breakfast at Pauwabas. We can enjoy spotting wild life while walking through the forest trail. We have to walk through the lush forest of Rhododendron, Oak, Pine and Juniper during the walk. In the middle of the trek, you can have a breathtaking view of Mt. Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal and some smaller peaks. Overnight at Camp in Kharka.

Day 16: Trek from Kharka to Okhreni (2045 m), BLD, Tented camping

We take a leave in early morning after breakfast. The trail from here descend through stunning, dense Rhododendron and pine forest. The lucky observants get to spot some wild animals such as Mountain Deer, Langur Monkeys and Danfe during the walk through the forest. We spend overnight here in Okhreni with great views of the mountains from tented camps.

Day 17: Trek from Okhreni to Chautara (1235 m), BLD, Tented camping

It’s the last trekking day of our wonderful trekking journey through beautiful lands and different vegetation. The path goes downward through small villages where we get to see diverse ethnic groups living side by side supporting each other. After we reach there, we set our camps near by Chautara bazaar. After the evening lunch, we celebrate the last day of our trek with popular folk songs, Nepalese drums and cultural dances.

Day 18: Drive from Chautara to Kathmandu, BL.

After early breakfast, we leave for driving back to Kathmandu. With the road passing through terraced farmlands, streams, rivers, local settlements, high hills and along the river side we finally reach Kathmandu. Here in valley, you can buy some Nepalese gifts for your friends and family. Then at the end of the day, we will have the farewell dinner, sharing the beautiful memories throughout our beautiful journey.

Safe Drinking Water during Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking

Hydrating yourself is the most important thing to do during the trek. You should drink at least 3 liters of water every day or more. The main reason is to avoid the altitude sickness and to avoid other health issues. How is the Accommodation during the Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking?

In Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking, we will provide you the teahouses and tented camping accommodations. A teahouse is typically a mountain lodge which is a combination of a lodge or a guest house and a restaurant or a café with basic furniture and interiors suitable for the social hangout. Many teahouses have attached bathrooms and the central heating furnace. Also many teahouses provide the European toilets while Asian style of toilets are available in every teahouses. Hot showers are available but on extra cost. The same goes with the hot drinking water since they use the gas or solar to boil the water. Sleeping blankets are usually provided but we recommend you to carry your own sleeping bags for the hygienic purpose {can be arranged on request}. At the same time, it’s better to carry your own toiletries including the towels.

During the camping days, you will be sleeping in the camps set up by our field Sherpa staffs. There will be separate kitchen and dining and toilet tents. Your meals will be freshly cooked and you will be served day and nights by our Sherpas. Our staffs will carry the sleeping bags, pillows and mattresses for you to sleep in the tents. What are the permits that I need for Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking?

For Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking, you will need to make two permits: Langtang National Park entrance fee and TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System).

How does this tipping system in Nepal work and do I have to tip?

Tipping is not compulsory for Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking however tipping is all about showing your gratitude and appreciation. We care about our staffs in the fields so we expect you to look after them in return for them looking after you throughout your journey. They are your closest friend in the remotest parts and also your protector whenever anything seems to happen to you. So tipping is highly expected and we’ve made it mandatory too. The amount of gratuities can be determined by yourselves. Normally, a guide and also a porter expects around $10 or more per day.

However in average, Spring {March, April and May} and Autumn {September, October and November} are the best times or seasons to trek to Langtang Tilman Pass. Spring and Autumn are known as the Peak season or Busy season in Nepal. It’s because the temperature is moderate during these seasons and the best panoramic mountain views are guaranteed while during other Summer {June, July and August} and Winter {December, January and February} season, the clear weather is not guaranteed. During the trek, you will have your breakfast and dinner in the same teahouse / tented camps where you spend the night while the lunch will be served en route towards the next destination of the day. There are good choices to choose from; Nepalese, Tibetan, Indian, Continental, etc. during teahouse days. Except in camping days, when freshly cooked meals will be served and usually the foods are basic and with few choices but they will certainly be healthy and nutritious. Our Sherpas will make sure that you eat enough food for the trekking journey.

Do I need a travel insurance for Langtang Tilman Pass Trekking?

Travel insurance is a must when you trek to Langtang Tilman Pass.
