Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking is the most difficult trekking in Nepal which covers the passing of 3 highest passes into the wilderness of the Great Himalayan Trail region. To accomplish this journey, one should have the adequate knowledge of basic climbing and rope skills since it goes beyond normal trekking through the glaciers and snow fields of 3 difficult highest passes, all of them above 6000m.

Sherpani Col Trekking starts from the Arun valley in Eastern Nepal and head to the Mount Makalu base camp (5060m) continuing further higher to Mount Barunche base camp (5380m), East and West Col (6100m+), Amphulapcha pass (5845m) and eventually to arrive in the Mount Everest region. As we go deeper and higher, we will spent the wilderness nights amidst the glaciers in the tented camping since it is completely the alpine zone. Makalu high passes trek ultimately ends at Lukla, the gateway to Everest.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu 1400m, Hotel

Your arrival in Nepal is highly appreciated. Namaste and welcome to Nepal. You will be received in the airport and transferred to the hotel.

Day 02: Preparation in Kathmandu and sightseeing, B, Hotel

Before we embark on a great adventurous journey, let's be entirely prepared with the preparations. Kathmandu sightseeing can be done afterwards.

Day 03: Fly to Tumlingtar and drive to Chiuruwa (east of Num) – 8 hrs, BLD, Camp

In the moring you will be transferred to domestic airport for flight to Tumlingtar to enjoy the bird eye view of Langtang range to Mt Everest, Makalu and Kanchenjunga. The flight takes about 50 minutes to reach the Tumlingtar airport. Once we reach airport, we meet our rest of the teammates. Afterward we take a drive to Chiuruwa. Overnight stay in tented camp. 

Day 04: Trek from Chiuruwa (1800 m) to Seduwa (1500 m) - 5 hrs, BLD, Camp

The trail initially descends steeply to the Arun River. After crossing the suspension bridge, the way starts to ascend and leads to the rain forest. A further walk takes you to the small Seduwa village with primary school and medical facility.

Day 05: Trek from Seduwa (1500 m) to Tashigoan (2100 m)- 7 hrs, BLD, Camp

Trek to Tashigoan is short and with soft walks. The trail usually passes through the terraced farming fields. Before Tashigoan, the way is uphill through millet and rice field for an hour. 

Day 06: Trek from Tashigoan (2100 m) to Kongma Danda (3500 m)- 7 hrs, BLD, Camp

We leave our last settlement of the route and head towards Kongma Danda. The initial walk starts through the dense forest of rhododendron and pine forest. As we enter the pasture land, we can encounter temporary shepherd hut on the way. The way to Kongma Danda is uphill climb. 

Day 07: Acclimatization day in Kongma Danda, BLD, Camp

Today is day for the acclimatization. As the elevation gets higher and higher, more we need to acclimatize. So, we stay extra day in Kongma Danda for the rest. 

Day 08: Trek from Kongma Danda (3500m) to Debote (3650m) via Tutu-La and Shipton-La (4125m) 8hrs, BLD, Camp

After spending a day in Kongma Danda, its time to walk through the beautiful landscape surrounded by the snow-capped mountains. The ups and downs walk leads to the Thulo Pokhari (Big Pond) and Sano Pokhari (Small Pokhari). The further trail passes through some passes like Tutu-La pass and Shipton-La pass. Onward, the way descends again to the forest. Our staff will clear the space for camping.

Day 09: Trek from Debote (3650 m) to Yangle Kharka (3557 m)- 6 hrs, BLD, Camp

Walking through the wood, the view of Kumbakarna can be observed above the tree line. Further away, the descend way leads to the beautiful Barun Valley. Valley completely lies in Makalu Barun National Park. It is the valley of grassy land with flowers and above that many water streams flowing from the cliff. As we reach the beautiful valley the walk is soft and easy, just uphill slope. Following the trail of Barun water streams, we wak to Yangle Kharka for camping and overnight stay. 

Day 10: Trek from Yangle Kharka (3557 m) to Langmale Kharka (4410 m)- 4 hrs, BLD, Camp

It is the short day of trek. The trek begins by crossing the wooden bridge of Barun river. The trail leads to the way of boulder and the vegetation get sparse. As we go further in sight of Barun Glacier, we can see the breath taking view of tower Makalu. The short walk takes to Langmale Kharka, also known as Makalu Low Base Camp. Langmale Kharka offers the fascinating south face of Makalu and Baruntse. 

Day 11: Trek from Langmale Kharka (4410 m) to Makalu Base Camp (4870 m)- 4 hrs, BLD, Camp

The trail leads to the more off beaten track to the Makalu Base Camp. The way is short but need to climb up for a bit. Walking above the Barun Glacier with the spectacular view of Makalu and other peaks along with the glacier takes us to the base camp. 

Day 12: Rest and acclimatization day, BLD, Camp

Another important day for acclimatization. As the elevation gets higher, the more the body needs to acclimatize. On this rest day, we can hike up to moraine ridge for the eye-catching view of Makalu and far view of Everest and Lhotse in the east side.  

Day 13: Trek from Makalu Base Camp (4870 m) to Swiss Base Camp (5150 m)- 4 hrs, BLD, Camp

After a day in base camp, it’s time to ascend to Swiss Base Camp. The short trek from Makalu base camp is easy and trail climbs up easily to accomplish Sherpani Col Pass. We will set camping for overnight stay.

Day 14: Rest day in Swiss base camp, BLD, Camp

Rest day in Swiss Base Camp is very necessary. A big day is coming ahead and we need to be properly ready for the Sherpani Col pass. On the rest of the day, you can explore the surrounding area for the fantastic view of Everest and Lhotse.

Day 15: Trek from Swiss Base Camp (5150 m) to Sherpani Col High Camp  (5700 m)- 5 hrs, BLD, Camp

From Swiss Base Camp we climb to Sherpani Col High Camp, also known as French Base Camp too. We stay at the height of 5700 meters so that the next day can be easy as well as for the present day too. Staying at higher elevation is not good idea for acclimatization. We will be staying on the lap of mountain for a night in high camp. 

Day 16: Trek from Sherpani Col High Camp (5700 m) to Baruntse Base Camp (5688 m) via Sherpani Col Pass 6135m-7 hrs, BLD, Camp

After a breakfast we slowly trek towards Sherpani Col Base Camp. The trail passes through the landscape surrounded by the snow-capped mountain and barren land. And we ascend up to snowy and frosty land and we climb up to the Sherpani Col Pass and descend to Baruntse Base Camp. Sherpani Col pass has one of the admirable views of Mt Kanchenjunga, Makalu I, II, Jannu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Baruntse and Everest. We will be making camp in middle of two high passes on the moraine. 

Day 17: Trek from Baruntse Camp (5688m) to Honku Basin (5500m) crossing the West Col (6143m) 4hrs, BLD, Camp

We leave early in the morning from the Baruntse Base Camp. We cross another challenging high pass, West Col pass, above 6000 meters. The way follows the wide part of upper Honku Basin. A little further descend to the Honku Basin for overnight stay. 

Day 18: Trek from Honku Basin (5500 m) to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (5527 m)- 5 hrs, BLD, Camp

Early in the morning we leave to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp. The way is more challenging than other day. Your guide will fix rope in difficult sections. Then, the way descends on glacial land to Imjatse valley and to the Amphu Lapcha Base Camp. 

Day 19: Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (5527 m), Rest day, BLD, Camp

After crossing two major high passes, its time to take some rest. The next day is another pass day so we need to regain stamina and energy. So we will take rest for a day in the beautiful Imjatse valley. 

Day 20: Trek from Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (5527 m) to Chhukung (4730 m) crossing Amphu Lapcha pass (5848 m)- 9 hrs, BLD, Camp

Another big day of the trek. We start our trek early in the morning. It takes some hours to reach the top of the pass and then descend to the Chhukung. From this day we enter the busiest trail of Nepal, Everest Base Camp. On the route to Amphu Lapcha pass we can observe the impressive south face of Lhotse and Lhotse Shar. 

Day 21: Trek from Chhukung (4730 m) to Dingboche (4410 m)- 4 hrs, BLD, Lodge

From Chhukung we descend to Dingboche. It is also the end of camping trek, now on we stay in Teahouse. It is a village in Khumbu region where Imja River flows directly on the east side. One of the key attractions of the village is kilometers of stone wall made of different size of stone that covers the entire valley of Imja. 

Day 22: Trek from Dingboche (4410 m) to Tengboche- 4 hrs, BLD, Lodge

The trek is all the way descending to Tengboche. On the way, we can observe the majestic view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and many more. Tengboche is very famous for the very old ancient Tengboche monastery. It is also the biggest monastery of Everest region. As we reach Tengboche, you can explore the village or hike to the view point for panoramic scene. 

Day 23: Trek from Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (3440 m)- 5 hrs, BLD, Lodge

On this day we trek down to the Namche Bazaar, one of the popular Himalayan towns. It is the busiest town of Everest region. It has all kinds of modern facilities. The town has adequate lodges and hotels, fancy restaurant, café and bakery, brightening up massage, banking service and many more. Also the Namche Bazaar is the view point of Mt Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse. 

Day 24: Trek from Namche Bazaar (3440 m) to Lukla (2840 m)- 8 hrs, BLD, Lodge

After a long day of trek, our journey comes to an end. It is the last day on your foot. The trail again passes through the green lush vegetation. As the way descends to the Phakding and ascends to the Lukla. You can explore Lukla while your guide will re-conform flight day. As it is last day with your crew, in the evening it is time to celebrate accomplishment of the great journey. 

Day 25: Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, B, Hotel

After the early morning breakfast your guide will take you to Tenzing Hillary Airport for the flight to Kathmandu. This 30 minutes of scenic flight shares best bird-eye view of high Himalayas from above the sky. After arrival in Kathmandu, your guide will drop you to the respective hotel. Remaining day, you can have rest or explore the local market of Kathmandu. 

Day 26: Rest and shopping day, BD, Hotel

After accomplishing the spine-chilling Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking, it's high time to get some proper rest. We will let you have your time. You can do some souvenir shopping too. Farewell dinner is served.

Day 27: International departure, B, Flight

With heavy heart, we will bid farewell in the last day of your Nepal stay. You will be dropped and see off in the airport. See you again.

Kathmandu airport pick up and drop services

Nature Lovers Treks and Tours’ staffs will pick you up from the airport as per your flight arrival time and similarly drop you off in the airport for international departure according to your flight schedule. During arrival, please don’t forget to look for your name placard hold by the team, outside the airport arrival gate. Customized Trips and Trip departure

Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking departs from Kathmandu as per our fixed departure dates. You can join any available fixed departure groups if you are a solo or small group travelers if you wish to, when the trips cannot be customized.

You will be staying in the 3 star hotel in Kathmandu while in the teahouse lodges and tented camps during the trek.

Nature Lovers Treks and Tours has the best accommodation arrangement for you from the beginning to the end. We believe after the tough walking day, everyone deserves the proper rest and the right ambience to relax and chill. Therefore, our choice of accommodation is the best when it comes to the trekking days. The rooms will be clean and comfy. Our entire accommodations will be on twin-sharing basis as you can see, so you have to let us know if others; let’s say if you want triple or quadruple sharing or if you want a double bed, etc. There will be extra charge for the single supplement. Safe Drinking Water during Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking

Hydrating yourself is the most important thing to do during the trek. You should drink at least 3 liters of water every day or more. The main reason is to avoid the altitude sickness and to avoid other health issues. Nature Lovers Treks and Tours provides you water purification tablets or liquids to purify the water in the mountains. You can even buy mineral water or boiled water on extra cost in some days. For the rest of the days, we will boil our own water.

We always suggest you to keep extra one or two days in your trek since we are taking the domestic flights. The weather in the mountains is unpredictable and can change anytime drastically which means your flight can be delayed or at worst cancelled and postponed for the next day. How is the Accommodation during the Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking?

In Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking, we will provide you the teahouses and tented camping accommodations. A teahouse is typically a mountain lodge which is a combination of a lodge or a guest house and a restaurant or a café with basic furniture and interiors suitable for the social hangout. Few teahouses have attached bathrooms and the central heating furnace. Also very few teahouses provide the European toilets while Asian style of toilets are available in every teahouses. Hot showers are available but on extra cost. The same goes with the hot drinking water since they use the gas or solar to boil the water. Sleeping blankets are usually provided but we recommend you to carry your own sleeping bags for the hygienic purpose {can be arranged on request}. At the same time, it’s better to carry your own toiletries including the towels.

During the camping days, you will be sleeping in the camps set up by our field Sherpa staffs. There will be separate kitchen and dining and toilet tents. Your meals will be freshly cooked and you will be served day and nights by our Sherpas. Our staffs will carry the sleeping bags, pillows and mattresses for you to sleep in the tents. What are the permits that I need for Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking?

For Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking, you will need to make 4 permits: Makalu-Barun National Park fee, TIMS card {Trekkers' Information Management System}, Sagarmatha National Park Entrance fee {can be made in Nepal Tourism Board at Kathmandu or in Monjo} and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance fee {obtained in Lukla}.

How does this tipping system in Nepal work and do I have to tip?

Tipping is not compulsory for Makalu Sherpani Col High Pass Trekking however tipping is all about showing your gratitude and appreciation. We care about our staffs in the fields so we expect you to look after them in return for them looking after you throughout your journey.
